Duration: April-June 2022
Context:
This project was organized to utilize funds collected in the public collection for Afghanistan that was organised by CCR. Türkiye was selected as a place for intervention given the ongoing process of registration that CCR is undergoing (=to build our country programme), but also to cover the needs of Afghan refugees in the country.
In the summer of 2021, Taliban and political conflicts and violence hit Afghanistan, and people in the country have faced either displacement or extreme challenges. This humanitarian crisis also affected Türkiye as many people of Afghanistan had to leave the country and sought refuge in neighboring countries. For the last five years, Türkiye is the first address where Afghan refugees will either stay permanently or wait at a transit point to cross to third countries. There are approximately 100.000 registered and unregistered Afghan refugees in different provinces in Türkiye, predominantly in Istanbul, Kayseri, Konya, Trabzon, and Van. These data make Afghan people the second largest refugee group in the country just after Syrian refugees. Afghan refugees are generally considered to be “irregular migrants” since they crossed borders without official documents. According to Turkish laws and regulations, irregular migrants are deported when caught. In some provinces (such as Istanbul), they live in warehouse-like buildings and households share one apartment. Their migration flow is often reproduced by their former networks in Türkiye.
Specifically, cities of Marmara Region such as Istanbul (Esenyurt and Zeytinburnu) and Sakarya; and Central Anatolia such as Konya and Kayseri; and Black Sea Region such as Trabzon, are the main areas where registered and (mostly) unregistered Afghan refugees live.
