Life saving and life sustaining assistance to the most affected by the Earthquake in Idleb and Northern Aleppo

Context:

A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck central Turkey and northwest Syria Feb 6, 2023, causing widespread damage. One of the most powerful quakes in the region in at least a century, while a second powerful shake hours later threatened to overwhelm rescue efforts. In central Turkey and Syria, the death toll rises to 5,000 with thousands injured. Hundreds remain trapped under the rubble and rescue efforts continue in the bitter cold.

According to the Syrian Defense, in northwest Syria at least 790 people have died and more than 2200 injured in the provinces of Aleppo and Idlib, where many buildings have collapsed. Hundreds remain trapped under the rubble and rescue efforts continue in the bitter cold. The death toll is likely to rise over the next few hours and days. 210 buildings are completely destroyed and 520 buildings are partially destroyed.

A winter storm in the region is exacerbating the disaster. Along with the devastation from the earthquake, Syrian communities are battling an ongoing cholera outbreak amid the harsh winter with heavy rain and snow over the weekend.

Project Goal:

The overall objective of the project is to contribute to the provision of essential life-saving services and efforts to ensure dignified living conditions for the most affected by Earthquake  in NW of Syria. 

Implementation and results:

  • O1: 90 crisis affected vulnerable families (475 individuals) have access to emergency food assistance through the provision of  Ready To Eat Ration (RTERs) to meet their basic and immediate  food needs, for up to 4 weeks
  • O2: Life-saving Shelter and NFI assistance for 95 Households (475 individuals)
  • O3: Installation of 10 latrines with water storage for informal settlements, communities and open fields in Idleb and A’zaz governorate (475 individuals)
