Duration: March 2023 - December 2023
Context:
To address the most acute needs of people in Northwest Syria, CCR invited its long-term and experienced implementing partner Violet, to jointly design an intervention focused on Idleb and Aleppo governorates. The proposed action will ensure access to food and other relevant services for the most vulnerable IDP households. At the same time, the project contains a strong localization element due to the engagement of local youth civil society organizations (CSOs), whose members will be trained in participatory humanitarian response and other topics, to be able to perform emergency response projects on their own. After the training, local CSOs will be invited to direct implementation of this action and thus provide for their community. Finally, to enhance the sustainability of the project outcomes in the community, activities will be complemented by life and business skills training followed by Livelihoods Activation Grants provision for young people from the most vulnerable households (the same target group which will be provided with access to food security and other needed services). This will allow young people in Idleb and Aleppo an opportunity to start up their businesses, become financially independent and sustain income-generating activities. Therefore, apart from addressing the acute basic needs, the proposed intervention will enhance the dignity and most importantly self-reliance in the local community.
In addition, the project is set to address emergency humanitarian needs as a result of an earthquake, which struck southern Turkey and Syria on 6 February 2023, causing widespread damage to an already severe humanitarian crisis in Northwest Syria. Given the current circumstances, the main problem is the significantly increased vulnerability of already at-risk families and individuals. They are in high need of non-food items as well as ready-to-eat kits to cover their immediate needs. Additionally, families and individuals who were already in distress are confronted with an unexceptional situation that is affecting their mental health situation severely. Protection and MHPSS activities are in high need to mitigate the risk of negative coping mechanisms and protection risks, especially for women, girls and children.
Project Goal:
The overall objective of the project is to ensure access of the population, including forcibly displaced groups, to food security and basic livelihood resources, while supporting the empowerment of relevant local capacities and delivering emergency aid to populations affected by the earthquake in NW Syria.
Implementation and results:
- O1.1: 80 young people from self-managed CSOs in NW Syria increased their abilities and capacities through youth- and community-led participatory humanitarian response training
