We lost everything in the earthquake. I pray that things will get better, says Emine from Türkiye

Emine and her husband lived in an old house. When the earthquake struck Türkiye last February, their house collapsed within moments, trapping them both inside. "We couldn't get out. We were scared, we didn't want to die. We started praying for it to be over," Emine recalls while sitting outside a container in a makeshift town on the outskirts of Malatya, Türkiye. The earthquake took the lives of nearly 60,000 people, and millions more lost their homes. A year after the earthquake, Emine and her husband continue to live in a temporary shelter.

Although Asma Bbakir lives in a country that has been torn by civil war for over 11 years, she has not given up on her childhood dreams. Thanks to an educational course from Caritas Czech Republic, the student of the College of Economics and Management has opened her own business - a small café that serves mainly as a quiet place for students or intellectuals to learn.

Taftanaz is a small town in northwest Syria with only 15,000 habitants. The town has become one of the main targets of the Syrian civil war as it is close to the strategically important airport. Many of the town’s residents have paid the biggest price. As have nearly 50 members of Eba Ghazal’s family.

This year marks the eleventh anniversary of the conflict in Syria. The city of Kafr Nabl in the northwest region was turned into a ghost town during the civil war. The place, which was controlled by anti-government forces at the beginning of the war, was first bombed by the Russian air force and later got under the control of the Syrian army. Most civilians fled the area, including Layla Ibrahim Kadur, who left her home and job in ruins.

The civil war in Syria has taken almost everything from Hassan Al Khaled. The bombing of Idlib killed his entire family, and Hassan himself lost his left leg, so he can only get around with the help of crutches. Thanks to an educational course from Caritas Czech Republic, Hassan opened his own small electronics shop and found new hope in life.
