How is Caritas Czech Republic helping after the earthquake in Turkey and Syria? Interview with our Relief Coordinator Anna Volfová

The death toll of last week's catastrophic earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria exceeded 25,000 people. And the number continues to grow. At the same time, over 5 million people have lost their homes in Syria alone, with hundreds of thousands more in Turkey. Caritas Czech Republic is helping to provide them with immediate humanitarian aid. We spoke to our colleague Anna Volfova, who is coordinating our aid to people affected by the earthquake, about the situation on the ground and how we are helping.

Life goes on in Syria. How is Caritas Czech Republic supporting civil society in the northwest?

The war in Syria has been going on for over 11 years. But Syrians are trying to carry on with their lives despite the conflict. Young people, in particular, have the desire and energy to become active in society and participate in the future of their country. Caritas Czech Republic is therefore supporting youth organisations in Syria to carry out their own projects and improve the lives of people in the northwest.

How we help Afghan refugees in Turkey thanks to the Caritas for Afghanistan fundraising appeal

30 August marks the one-year anniversary of the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan, after which the Taliban shortly retook power in the country. This has exacerbated the already poor security situation in the country and significantly deepened the humanitarian crisis. Large numbers of Afghans have been left with no option but to flee the country. We are helping those who have fled Afghanistan to Turkey to provide the basic necessities so that they can stand on their own feet in their new country.

Young Syrians are motivated to face the difficult situation, says lecturer Václav Šneberger

The civil war in Syria has been going on for more than 11 years. As a result, young Syrians have spent a large part of their lives at war. Yet they have not lost hope for a better future. Local non-governmental organizations help them to become active members of society. Caritas Czech Republic supports the work of 30 local organizations that focus on youth thanks to the support of the European Commission. Our collaborator Václav Šneberger, who has been working as a lecturer and methodologist in the field of education and development, recently travelled to the Turkish-Syrian border.
