Asma from Syria fulfills her childhood dream and opens her own café

Although Asma Bbakir lives in a country that has been torn by civil war for over 11 years, she has not given up on her childhood dreams. Thanks to an educational course from Caritas Czech Republic, the student of the College of Economics and Management has opened her own business - a small café that serves mainly as a quiet place for students or intellectuals to learn.

Taftanaz is a small town in northwest Syria with only 15,000 habitants. The town has become one of the main targets of the Syrian civil war as it is close to the strategically important airport. Many of the town’s residents have paid the biggest price. As have nearly 50 members of Eba Ghazal’s family.

This year marks the eleventh anniversary of the conflict in Syria. The city of Kafr Nabl in the northwest region was turned into a ghost town during the civil war. The place, which was controlled by anti-government forces at the beginning of the war, was first bombed by the Russian air force and later got under the control of the Syrian army. Most civilians fled the area, including Layla Ibrahim Kadur, who left her home and job in ruins.

We were deeply affected by the news that war had broken out in Ukraine at the end of February. But unfortunately, war is not only raging there - in Syria, but fighting has also been going on for over eleven years and the local population is exhausted by a large humanitarian crisis. Caritas Czech Republic has been helping in Syria almost from the very beginning. Together with Kateřina Velíšková, Caritas’ coordinator for the Middle East, let's take a look back at nearly a decade of our work in the region.

Caritas Czech Republic has launched civil society project in Northwest Syria

The civil war in Syria has been a harsh reality for the people there since 2011. Some of them left the country, but most of them left their homes but remain in Syria as internally displaced persons. Local civil society organizations focus, among other things, on humanitarian aid and development. Caritas Czech Republic has decided to support their efforts with a new project funded by the European Commission.
